Methodology and Data Sources
This page explains how every calculator on Car Upholstery Cost turns your inputs into a cost range, and where each number comes from. Prices were last reviewed on October 8, 2026.
How an estimate is built
Each calculator builds an estimate in 4 steps:
- Materials. A base material cost for the job, multiplied by factors for vehicle size, material grade and scope.
- Labor. Base labor hours, multiplied by factors for vehicle size, material and pattern work, then priced at the shop labor rate for your state or country.
- Shop fee. 5 percent of materials plus labor, for handling, disposal and setup.
- Range. Plus or minus 15 percent around the total (20 percent for cleaning and classic cars), shown as a planning range.
The cleaning calculator works differently. It starts from a service price for each cleaning tier, adds flat fees for specialty stains and add-ons, and has no separate shop fee. Each calculator page lists its full set of multipliers in its "How do we calculate" section.
| Calculator | Base figures | Range |
|---|---|---|
| Full-car calculator | Seats $400 + soft surfaces $350 + 36 labor hours (full refresh); $400 + $220 + 24 hours (major); $350 + $110 + 15 hours (light) | ±15% |
| Seat calculator | $180 materials + 9 labor hours per bucket seat; foam $0, $80 or $250 per seat; 8 to 20 percent less per seat for 2 or more seats | ±15% |
| Headliner calculator | $30 + 2 hours (re-glue); $120 + 4 hours (fabric); $350 + 7 hours (fabric and board) | ±15% |
| Carpet calculator | $166.95 molded kit + 3 labor hours (sedan); each vehicle class uses the median price of its own kits, and its hours are 3 times the class factor (1.00 to 1.93); ultra-plush carpet adds 55% and mass backing 40% of the kit price | ±15% |
| Dashboard calculator | $899.74 new factory dash or $300 used dash + 4 labor hours (sedan); SUVs and minivans use the medians of their own part listings and the same 4 hours | ±15% |
| Door panel calculator | $75 used front door panel + 0.3 labor hours (sedan, 1 panel); 2 panels take 0.4 hours; SUVs and pickups use the medians of their own listings; a peeling-fabric repair of both front doors is 0.6 hours, labor only | ±15% |
| Leather calculator | $1,800 + 22 hours (seats and doors); $2,800 + 36 hours (adds console and dash); $4,200 + 52 hours (full cabin) | ±15% |
| Cleaning calculator | $130, $220 or $340 per service tier, plus $50 to $150 per specialty stain and $35 to $80 per add-on; no shop fee | ±20% |
| Classic calculator | $1,200 + 30 hours (seats); $2,400 + 55 hours (seats and trim); $4,500 + 100 hours (full custom), at an $80/hr specialist rate | ±20% |
U.S. labor rates
U.S. shop labor rates come from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (OEWS) for May 2024, occupation code 51-6093 (upholsterers). The national mean wage is $22.58 an hour.
The calculators turn each wage into a customer-facing shop rate with one formula: shop rate = round(state wage × 65 ÷ 22.58). That sets the national shop rate at $65/hr. State rates run from $53/hr in Texas to $83/hr in New York.
BLS did not publish a May 2024 estimate for this occupation in 8 markets. Their wages are imputed from nearby published markets, and the calculator marks each one as imputed:
| Market | Imputed wage | Shop rate | Imputed from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alaska | $24.29/hr | $70/hr | remote and western markets |
| District of Columbia | $24.80/hr | $71/hr | nearby Mid-Atlantic markets |
| New Hampshire | $22.82/hr | $66/hr | nearby New England markets |
| New Mexico | $22.34/hr | $64/hr | nearby Southwest and Mountain markets |
| Rhode Island | $24.58/hr | $71/hr | Connecticut and Massachusetts |
| South Dakota | $26.18/hr | $75/hr | nearby Plains markets |
| West Virginia | $19.88/hr | $57/hr | nearby Appalachian and Mid-Atlantic markets |
| Wyoming | $25.23/hr | $73/hr | nearby Mountain and Plains markets |
Classic and custom work uses a specialist rate 23 percent above the general rate, which is $80/hr in the U.S.
Other countries
Outside the U.S., no comparable occupation-level wage data covers every region, so these rates are estimates. Each one is stored as a U.S. dollar equivalent, scaled from the national pay data named below, and shown in local currency.
| Country | National rate | Regional spread | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | £44/hr (US$58) | £39 (Northern Ireland) to £51 (London) | ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (SOC 5419), scaled by ONS regional pay relativities for skilled trades |
| Canada | C$78/hr (US$55) | C$71 (Prince Edward Island) to C$90 (Northwest Territories, Nunavut) | Statistics Canada Job Bank wages (NOC 73201), scaled by regional pay relativities |
| Australia | A$104/hr (US$72) | A$96 (Tasmania) to A$114 (Western Australia) | ABS wage data (ANZSCO 393213), scaled by regional pay relativities |
| New Zealand | NZ$110/hr (US$62) | National rate only | Stats NZ wage data |
| Ireland | €53/hr (US$60) | National rate only | CSO Earnings and Labour Costs data for skilled craft trades |
| India | ₹963/hr (US$10) | ₹867 (Kolkata) to ₹1,156 (Mumbai, Delhi NCR) | Rough estimate from general India cost data, plus a 0.55 material-cost factor; lower confidence |
| Other countries | US$50/hr | None | Rough fallback for countries without a rate |
Exchange rates
Every formula runs in U.S. dollars. Pages and calculators outside the U.S. convert the figures for display only, at one set of rates from the Federal Reserve H.10 release of October 5, 2026 (rates for October 2, 2026):
- US$1.3234 per £1
- US$0.6953 per A$1
- C$1.4253 per US$1
- ₹96.31 per US$1
- US$0.5612 per NZ$1
- US$1.1259 per €1
Hourly rates round to the nearest 1 and totals to the nearest 10 (100 for rupees). Exchange rates move daily, so local figures are planning figures too.
Vehicle model presets
The optional make and model pickers set the vehicle size class from public vehicle data. A preset changes only the size class, never the material or labor figures.

What we set ourselves
Material costs, labor hours and the multipliers for vehicle size, material, scope and stitching are our own planning figures. No external source publishes them. The "last reviewed" date on each calculator changes whenever one of these figures changes.
The carpet, dashboard and door panel calculators are the exceptions. The carpet calculator's kit prices are the medians of 451 molded kits that Stock Interiors listed on October 10, 2026, its grade and mass backing prices are the surcharges on those listings, and its 3 base labor hours come from the Stock Interiors install instructions.
The dashboard calculator's part prices are the medians of 9 new dash listings on dealer parts websites and 190 used dash listings from auto recyclers, checked on October 10 and 11, 2026. Its 4 labor hours come from Toyota's dealer bulletin for Warranty Enhancement Program ZE6, and every vehicle type gets the same 4 hours.
The door panel calculator's panel prices are the medians of 158 used front door panel listings from auto recyclers, checked on October 10 and 11, 2026. Its labor hours come from carmaker service bulletins: the medians of FCA, Hyundai and Genesis times for a panel swap, and Ford's time for re-stapling peeling fabric on both front doors.
What the range means
Every result is a planning range, not a quote. A shop sees the vehicle, the condition of the foam and frame, and the parts you choose; an online estimate cannot. Sales tax, VAT or GST, disposal fees and rush fees are not included. Use the range to set a budget, then compare it with 2 or 3 written shop quotes.
Planning tools
3 tools size materials from your own measurements instead of pricing work:
- Sound Deadening Material Calculator: Dynamat's published areas for an average passenger car (12 sq ft of inner door skin and 8 sq ft of outer door skin per 2 doors, 20 sq ft for the trunk, 12 sq ft for the roof, 72 sq ft for the floor and firewall) or your own length × width, times the coverage you pick. Dynamat states that at least 30 percent coverage is needed for a noticeable difference.
- Leather Conditioner Calculator: up to 150 ml per treatment, Colourlock's figure for one treatment of a full car interior, or your own measured amount, times the treatments in 12 months. The schedules come from Colourlock (every 3 months for high-traffic areas) and Leather Honey (one treatment lasts six months or longer).
- Car Seat Cover Size Calculator: the cover style follows the seat type, headrest and features you pick; the size is your own 4 measurements, checked against the range a cover's maker lists.
