Indian car upholstery cost calculator
About this India calculator
This page applies the Car Upholstery Cost model to Indian trim shop rates with metro-level pricing. Pick from 7 major metros — Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata — plus an India national average, and the calculator swaps in that metro's estimated shop labour rate.
Use it for a budgeting range before you visit shops. The output covers the labour and material side of a full-car reupholstery; GST (18%) and unusual freight or disposal fees are not included.
How the India estimate is built — and why it is rougher
India needs two estimated numbers, not one. The first is a shop labour rate of about $10/hr USD-equivalent, varied a little by metro. The second is a material-cost factor of 0.55: the calculator's material baselines are priced for the US market, and while Indian labour is far cheaper, Indian material costs run only moderately below US levels. Without the material factor, every India estimate would land 3 to 5 times too high.
Neither number comes from published occupation-specific wage data — India does not release figures comparable to the US BLS or UK ONS sources. They are estimates from general India cost data. The India page is genuinely useful for budgeting, but its figures carry lower confidence than the US, UK, Australia and Canada pages. The calculator says so on every estimate.
What this calculator does not do
- Price slip-on seat covers. Rexine and art-leather seat covers are a cheaper, separate product in India. This tool prices full reupholstery, not fitted covers.
- Include GST or full-vehicle restoration outside upholstery. For classic restoration projects, see our Classic Car Calculator.
- Display in INR. Figures stay in USD for cross-market comparability. Multiply the total by ~85 for an approximate INR figure at typical 2026 rates.

India car upholstery FAQs
Common questions about reupholstering a car in India.
How much does it cost to reupholster a car in India?
A full-car reupholstery in India typically runs the equivalent of $480 to $1,440 USD — roughly Rs 40,000 to Rs 1,20,000 — for a sedan, depending on scope tier, material package and metro. A light refresh of seats plus one component can be as low as the equivalent of Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000; a premium full-leather SUV interior can pass Rs 1,40,000. Use the calculator to refine for your build.
How does the metro selector work?
The calculator carries 7 major metros — Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata — plus an India national average. Each metro applies its own estimated shop labour rate, with Mumbai and Delhi NCR highest and Kolkata lowest. Change the metro and the labour line and total update instantly. The default is the India national average.
Why are the India figures rougher than the US or UK numbers?
Honesty matters here. For the US the calculator uses published BLS wage data; for the UK, Australia and Canada it scales from published regional pay relativities. India does not publish occupation-specific wage figures for car upholsterers that are comparable to those sources. So both the India labour rate and the material-cost factor are estimates derived from general India cost data — useful for budgeting, but lower confidence than the other country pages. Treat the output as a planning range, not a quote.
Why is there a separate material-cost factor for India?
The calculator's material baselines are priced for the US market. Indian labour is far cheaper than US labour, but Indian material costs — leather, vinyl, foam — are only moderately cheaper, since materials trade closer to global prices. Applying only a low labour rate would leave the estimate 3 to 5 times too high. So India also applies a material-cost factor of 0.55, bringing material into a realistic Indian range. The other country pages keep this factor at 1.
Why are the figures shown in USD on this India page?
The calculator is one unified pricing model that runs across the United States and other markets. Showing everything in USD keeps it comparable across countries. To convert to Indian Rupees, multiply by your current exchange rate — at typical 2026 rates that is roughly $1 USD = Rs 85 INR. So a $750 estimate is about Rs 64,000.
Is GST included in the estimate?
No. GST (18% on upholstery and repair services in India as of 2026) is not included in the calculator's output. Registered Indian shops will add it on top of the quoted labour and materials. For a final figure, multiply the calculator's total by 1.18.
Does this cover seat covers or full reupholstery?
Full reupholstery — replacing the seat upholstery, foam where needed, and trim across the interior. It does not price slip-on or stitched 'seat covers' (called rexine or art-leather covers), which are a cheaper, separate product in India. If you only want fitted seat covers, expect a small fraction of the figures shown here. 'Rexine' in India maps to the Vinyl / Leatherette material option.
