How the province rates are built
The Canadian national rate is $55/hr (USD-equivalent), derived from Statistics Canada Job Bank wage data for NOC 73201 (upholsterers). Each province then scales that figure by published Statistics Canada regional pay relativities for skilled trades — Alberta and the territories above the national average, the Atlantic provinces below it. The result is a planning estimate, not a quoted rate.

Alberta's trade labour rates run above the national average, a long-running effect of the energy sector pulling skilled trades into higher-paying work. The territories are higher still because of remote-location wage premiums. The Atlantic provinces — Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island — sit below the national average. The calculator reflects that spread.
How accurate are the Canadian province figures?
They are estimates, and the calculator says so plainly. Statistics Canada does not publish a separate wage figure for car upholsterers at province level — the occupation is too small for a reliable provincial sample. Each province's rate is scaled from the national figure using published Statistics Canada regional pay relativities for skilled trades. The relativities (Alberta and the territories highest, Atlantic provinces lowest) are well established; the exact per-province rate is a planning estimate.
Is GST, HST or PST included in the estimate?
No. Sales tax — GST, HST or PST depending on your province — is not included in the calculator's output. Canadian trim shops will add the applicable tax on top of the quoted labour and materials. Tax rates vary from 5% (Alberta, GST only) to 15% (the HST provinces), so add your provincial rate to the calculator's total for an out-the-door figure.
Does Quebec use different terminology?
Yes. In Quebec, search for 'sellier automobile' or 'rembourrage automobile' for French-language results. Elsewhere in Canada, 'auto upholstery shop' or 'automotive upholsterer' plus your city works well. The pricing model is the same across all provinces — only the labour rate changes.
