About this Australia calculator
This page applies the Car Upholstery Cost model to Australian motor trimmer rates with state-level pricing. Pick from all 8 states and territories — New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and the rest — and the calculator swaps in that state's shop labour rate.
Use it when you want a defensible budget figure before contacting motor trimmers in your area. The output covers the labour and material side of a full-car reupholstery; GST (10%) and unusual freight or disposal fees are not included.
How the state rates are built
The Australian national rate is $72/hr (USD-equivalent), derived from ABS wage data for ANZSCO 393213 (vehicle trimmers). Each state then scales that figure by published ABS regional pay relativities for skilled trades — Western Australia and the Northern Territory above the national average on the back of the resources economy, Tasmania and South Australia below it. The result is a planning estimate, not a quoted rate.
What this calculator does not do
- Include GST, registration work, or full-vehicle restoration outside upholstery. For classic restoration projects, see our Classic Car Calculator.
- Quote a specific shop. Motor trimmers factor in vehicle condition, foam decay, broken clips, hidden damage and parts availability — none of which an online estimator can see.
- Display in AUD. Figures stay in USD for cross-market comparability. Multiply the total by ~1.55 for an approximate AUD figure at typical 2026 rates.

Australia car upholstery FAQs
Common questions about reupholstering a car in Australia.
How much does it cost to reupholster a car in Australia?
A full-car reupholstery in Australia typically runs the equivalent of $3,000 to $9,000 USD for a sedan, depending on scope tier, material package and state. Vinyl and cloth packages sit at the low end, mixed cloth-and-leather around the middle, and full leather at the high end. Western Australia and the Northern Territory run highest; Tasmania and South Australia run lowest.
How does the state selector work?
The calculator carries all 8 Australian states and territories plus a national average. Each applies its own shop labour rate, from $67/hr in Tasmania up to $79/hr in Western Australia. Change the state and the labour line and total update instantly. The default is the Australia national average at $72/hr.
Why is Western Australia more expensive?
WA and the Northern Territory carry the highest trade labour rates in the country, a long-running effect of the mining and resources economy pulling skilled trades into higher-paying work. Motor trimmers in those states bill above the national average as a result. The calculator reflects that with WA at $79/hr and NT at $78/hr.
How accurate are the Australian state figures?
They are estimates, and the calculator says so plainly. The Australian Bureau of Statistics does not publish a separate wage figure for vehicle upholsterers at state level — the occupation is too small for a reliable state sample. Each state's rate is scaled from the national figure using published ABS regional pay relativities for skilled trades. The relativities (WA and NT highest, Tasmania lowest) are well established; the exact per-state rate is a planning estimate.
Is GST included in the estimate?
No. GST (10% in Australia) is not included in the calculator's output. Registered Australian trim shops will add it on top of the quoted labour and materials. For a final out-the-door figure, multiply the calculator's total by 1.10.
What is a car upholsterer called in Australia?
In Australia the trade is usually called a 'motor trimmer' or 'auto trimmer' — the ANZSCO occupation code 393213 is 'Vehicle Trimmer'. 'Upholsterer' on its own more often refers to furniture work. When searching for a shop, 'motor trimmer' plus your city gives the best results.
Why are the figures shown in USD on this Australia page?
The calculator is one unified pricing model that runs across the United States and other markets. Showing everything in USD makes it easy to compare Australian motor trimmer costs against U.S., UK and Canadian shops side by side. To convert to AUD, multiply by your current exchange rate — at typical 2026 rates that is roughly $1 USD = $1.55 AUD.
